I have seen excerpts of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, and my mother-in-law used to transcribe Old English original text into modern English. You can only guess at some of the words. I also used to have an English dictionary dated late sixteen hundreds that I found very interesting. I've always found etymology fascinating.
Whilst I wouldn't have wanted to live through these these times, I've often wished I could time travel, and be a fly n the wall, as it were, and see how people lived. I doubt we'd understand the language of the time though.
Good point about the language, Ruth. Have you seen any contemporary accounts in the original? Even 400 years later in Tudor times the spelling is often confusing especially as frequently the same word or name can be spelled differently within a single sentence.
